Here’s some completely subjective numbers comparing Unladen Swallow 2009Q2 to the reference C implementation of Python (CPython). No discernable difference in a clean build, and CPython is a good bit faster on a simple update build (i.e. just file copies):

One of the biggest pains of having to deal with python development in Windows is using the right runtime when running your script. Many scripts will run fine in the python interpreter bundled with Cygwin, but many require the official Python build for windows which understands paths etc correctly.
